PRO BMS for LiFePO4 16 Battery Cells

BMS, or Battery Management System, is an electronic device used for the protection and monitoring of a battery assembly.

Monitoring is performed by providing current values through predefined interfaces to higher-level systems. These systems are typically IT infrastructures that further process the data according to customer requirements – PV inverters, energy storage management systems, smart home systems, SCADA integration systems, and similar.

The PRO BMS Slave unit is a single-board electronic component. The purpose of the Slave unit is the precise measurement of voltage across all cells – each cell measured individually, bidirectional battery current measurement, temperature measurement, load pre-charging, and control of the battery switching element.

The unit is equipped with the following autonomous functions and responds to undesirable states without the involvement of the Master unit:

  • Battery disconnection when the maximum or minimum cell voltage is exceeded
  • Battery disconnection when the maximum battery temperature is exceeded
  • Battery disconnection when the maximum battery current is exceeded, known as Fuse Simulation (the fault does not clear automatically; the unit must be restarted by disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply)
  • Load pre-charging, either in fixed time constant mode or adaptive pre-charging mode

The unit consists of 6 functional blocks:

  • 16-channel cell voltmeter, 17-bit +/- 1%
  • DC energy meter – measures current and delivered or consumed energy via a shunt resistor (the total SoC charge is calculated from this data by the Master unit)
  • Temperature ADC converter
  • Relay controlling the switching element and pre-charging
  • Microcontroller with connected inputs for battery on/off control
  • Power supply circuits and other auxiliary circuits. The MCU controls the operation of the entire unit
